How green is clean

Saw a paper napkin advertisement on TV. One guy uses his cloth napkin to dust something, and our hero explains he may later use the same cloth napkin to wipe his face and explains the virtue of using a paper napkin instead of the cloth one he is using. Well no doubt use and throw paper napkins are more hygienic than cloth but are they green enough. Every time I have travelled out to US, I have noticed the almost all toilets have paper towels for sure and I confess I love then. Paper napkins are used quite lavishly. Even Indian cities are catching up to this wasteful but convenient trend.

Similarly hand wash advertisements show kids washing hand in running water for couple of minutes to clean off all the germs. It reminds me of my dad who used to suggest using mug of take water for washing and shaving, so that water is not wasted.

Parents today are paranoid about keeping their kids clean and healthy. But there is increasing number of experts who suggest that it is our preoccupation with cleanliness which is weakening our body’s inherent defenses. This is causing increasing allergies and asthma (One such article here).

Cleanliness is overrated. Get Dirty Save Earth.
